And, yes, the festival is exactly what it sounds like: a hour-long collection of amazing cat videos culled from the internet, specially-curated by the folks at Just For Cats (which is a program of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies). “But wait a minute,” you might be saying aloud to yourself right now, “I already watch cat videos all day at home. And also at work.” Well that’s all well and good, but have you considered how much more fun it would be to bask in the glow of giant, mesmerizing cats in the amazing and criminally underappreciated VIFF/VanCity Theatre, sitting among and alongside all your new best friends whom you haven’t met yet? Did you consider it?
There are five showings you can attend this June 28; the first two of the day are designated for families (kids under 18 are admitted for only $5, but for these two screenings only), and for the rest of the day prices are set at $9 for students and $11 for adults (plus $2 for a VIFF membership, if you don’t already have one). If you still need convincing, then I should let you know that there will also be a face painter on site (working by donation), as well as BC SPCA shelter kittens that you can pet, photograph, or just look at while you ball your hands into fists and make little squealy noises to yourself (silent or otherwise). Lastly, if you decide to attend the 6:30 showing, then you have the opportunity to purchase a VIP ticket, which gets you a free cat ear costume (not actual cat ears), a chance to meet BC SPCA CEO Craig Daniell, and the opportunity to stuff your face with delicious Little Qualicum Cheese at the reception afterward. And, as everybody knows, cats + costumes + cheese are the holy trinity of any fun night out.
If you can’t make it out to one of the screenings, which are being held all across Canada, then at least consider making a donation on the Just For Cats page. Every dollar helps, you know! Your dollar too. And if you are going, remember to tag your tweets with #justforcats. See you at the kitten-petting booth!
